A.2.a of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) discusses informed consent. ACA Code of Ethics states that clients need information about the counseling process. The counselor needs to review the counseling process in writing and verbally to ensure the client understands, additionally the counselor must review the clients rights and responsibilities. The counselor must explain the purpose, goal, benefits, techniques, procedures, limitation, risks, fees, payments, and counselor qualifications (ACA, 2014). The Virginia Board of Counseling identifies many of the same things ACA for informed consent. Additionally, it states counselors must disclose all experimental methods and they cannot provide rebates for referral of clients (VA board of Counseling, 2014). I could not find an informed consent form for Virginia Schools including the county I live in Fairfax County. I found an informed consent form for North Smyrna Elementary School. Smyrna Elementary School’s informed consent (2014) discusses the services provided by the counseling program, confidentiality, and limits of confidentiality. After some searching I found an opt-out booklet for Fairfax County Schools. This booklet provided parents with information about many programs and services that were offered through Fairfax County Schools. The booklet included school counseling and identified the purpose of counseling, the types of counseling, benefits, and confidentiality.
