Counselor need to be aware that there will also be situations where they need to make proper decision using the ACA code of ethics. The following five scenarios are the most serious violations of ethical practice.
• The group leader does not mention confidentiality.
Before a counselor starts a group he/she needs to mention confidentiality to the group. It is very important to disclosed confidentiality as many members will share personal information. According to ACA B.1.c “Counselors protect the confidential information of prospective and current clients.” Therefore, it is very important before starting a group the leader disclosed confidentiality with the group members.
• A group leader imposes some of her values to teach morality.
No group leader should disclose their own values to teach morality. A group leader is there to help the group not to teach morality to the members. According to ACA A.4.b “Counselors are aware of and avoid imposing their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory in nature.” Counselor should never disclose their personal values to group members.

A counselor should never initiate sexual relationship with group members. A counselor should be professional at all times and should not have outside relationship. According to ACA A.5.a “Sexual and/or romantic counselor– client interactions or relationships with current clients is prohibited.” Therefore, a group leader should not interact with sexual relationship with group
