Licensure Requirements for Licensed Professional Counselors
The State of Georgia offers two professional licensures in the field of mental health. For professional who have never received a professional counselor license, whom are specifically interested in becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), licensure application entails a 10 step process, with some non- applicable steps based on applicant. ▪ A counselors services can be conducted via Tele-health as well as in person; in a clinic, office setting, or facility treatments. These services can be individual, in group, or family therapy. ▪ Trained counselors are able to utilize various therapy approaches, a counselor would consciously use a specific method to optimize the clients wellbeing. These types of therapy intervention include: Psycho-dynamic, Cognitive, Behavioral, Humanistic, and Integrative. 3 ▪ Counselors are to follow the governing rules and regulations of where they hold their licensure, as well as abide the provisions stated in the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics Guide (ACA). The State of Georgia, counselors rules and regulations, Chapter 135-7 CODE OF ETHICS 5 ( ) details limitations and unethical practices for counselors to become self aware. A misconduct, unethical or illegal behaviors could result in the suspension and revocation of license.
Some of the limitations in the realm of counseling include dual relationships; counselors should not provide services to friends, family members, or friends or family members of established clients. Undertaking advanced fees, charging for services that were not rendered and terminating services without advising the client, these are both unethical and legally binding behaviors.
Counselors are limited to practicing their services where they have obtained a graduate degree and proper supervision has been accounted. A detrimental occurrence could be a counselor failing to refer a client to another counselor or treatment when the client needs specialized
