Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem on October 17, 1915, the son of Polish immigrants, Isidore and Augusta Miller. Miller's father had established a successful clothing store upon coming to America, so the family enjoyed wealth; however, this prosperity ended with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Financial hardship compelled the Miller family to move to Brooklyn in 1929. The Crucible was a play written by Arthur Miller it is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of Salem that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692/93.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller introduces the idea, apparent in today’s world, that sometimes people blame others to save themselves from punishment through the characters’ actions and the asides from Miller. The most prominent character that displays this theme is Abigail Williams. Several times Abigail pushes the blame on others when she senses trouble. When Parris finds the girls dancing in the forest, Abigail knows she has to do something to avoid punishment.

First, John Proctor states the way he feels about Abigail Williams in a very rude way; “PROCTOR, breathless and in agony; it [Abigail] is a whore!” When John Proctor confessed to adultery, Abigail was questioned if all of what Mary Warren was true. She lied to keep her good name as the misleading person she is.
She works for the Proctors in their household; so this leads to a short affair with John Proctor and they wind up sleeping together even though John is married to a woman named Elizabeth. John immediately admits his mistake and regrets it; but Abigail thinks that because they had the affair they’re going to be with each other until death. John Proctor tells her that she is a married man and that it meant nothing to him; yet she keeps pleading and trying to persuade him to be with her. She even explains to him that she will go to the extremes of killing Elizabeth just to be with him and we see this when Abigail is in the forest
What if someone you care about was accused of doing a horrific act that they are indisputably innocent of and there is no way to prove it? What if you were accused of doing a horrific act that you certainly did and you could not prove it? What if you lived in a town where there was so much hysteria that the justice system relied on accusations solely as evidence? What if the punishment for these horrific acts was death?
