Who was Abraham Lincoln? Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He was born near Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. He had very little formal education, but was known to read as much as possible when not working on his father’s farm. One interesting fact was that he was the only president to have a patent which was for a device he invented to free steamboats that ran aground. Also, Abraham Lincoln wanted women to have the right to vote in 1836 way before anyone else got involved. What some people don’t know was that Lincoln actually lost in his first bid for a presidential ticket and he was an unsuccessful vice presidential candidate in 1856 at the republican convention. Abraham was born in a log cabin three miles south of Hodgenville. When he was two years old the family moved to another farm on Knob Creek, this time seven miles from Hodgenville. On this farm, Abraham lived for five years, helped his parents with chores, and learned his ABCs by attending school for a few weeks with his older sister Sarah. He moved two more times and the last time they moved to Illinois. “Lincoln made extraordinary efforts to attain knowledge while working on a farm, splitting rails for fences, and keeping store at New Salem, Illinois. He was a captain in the Black Hawk War, spent eight years in the Illinois legislature, and rode the circuit of courts for many years”(Freidel). It is thought that lincoln received his depression illness from his parents. “By studying Lincoln’s own letters and the observations of his friends and associates, historians have concluded that Lincoln battled with chronic depression for much of his life”(street). Abraham learned to deal with his depression and actually kept a positive attitude about it. Lincoln used the goal to end slavery to help him in his recovery method from the depression. He used the goal as his purpose in life and keep him moving forward and not think about his depression. He also faced many other challenges before and during his presidential term. One issue he faced in office was many slave states were upset that he won because he was against slavery, these states withdrew from the Union. Also, when Lincoln declared war, many people in the North thought that he shouldn’t have. No matter the challenge, Abraham always overcame every challenge he faced and some might say that was the reason he was one of the greatest presidents in history. There are some interesting facts that should definitely influence anyone who is thinking they cannot succeed in whatever they try to accomplish. For example, Abraham Lincoln faced many challenges throughout his entire life.
