Abraham Lincoln’s life before the presidency was extremely crucial in forming the character that we all adore and know about. The great orator, man who preserved the union and issued the Emancipation Proclamation was born on February 12th, 1809. His parents, Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln, had three children. Abraham had elder sister named Sarah and little brother named after his father Thomas Jr. Lincoln. Thomas Lincoln was very strict towards his children, which made the relationship between Abe and Thomas unpleasant. Thomas Lincoln had no legitimate education and worked as a farmer and carpenter. His mother died when young Abe was only nine years old. The children were devastated at their mother’s death and could not imagine their lives without her. After Abe’s mother died, Thomas Lincoln married Sarah Bush Johnston, who immediately grew close to young Abe and encouraged his childhood education. Abraham Lincoln got most of his education through books he read. It was difficult to find good schools and teachers in frontier Indiana. Rural life was very difficult in frontier Indiana, due to poverty, hard work and farming for young Abe. Lincoln found his job on the ferryboat at the age of seventeen. After two years of working on the ferryboat, he built his own flatboat and ran a load of farm produce down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. When Abe turned twenty-one, Thomas Lincoln to move again, and this time to Illinois. Abe and his father built another log cabin, which was a little bigger than the one they left in frontier Indiana. At age of twenty-two Abraham Lincoln decided to live on his own. He built a second flatboat and made another run-down river, moving to the town of New Salem.,
