How are a poem and a folktale similar and different in components? Many similarities and differences exist between the poem and the folktale "Abuelito Who" and "The Grandfather and Grandson". The poem and folktale have many components with differences and similarities between them. Some of those components include mood, genre, figurative language, theme, and more. In this essay, we compare and contrast the poem and the folktale. To begin with, comparing and contrasting characters of the poem “Abuelito Who” and the folktale “ The Grandfather and the Grandson" we have to start off talking about the two main characters the grandfather from the folktale and poem. The characters are different and similar because the folktale grandfather is disowned by his family. In contrast, in the poem, the grandfather is sick and was not himself in the past. In the folktale, it mentions, “His daughter-in-law scolded him. She told him that he had spoiled everything in the house and broken their dishes. The folktale is about treating your family members no matter how they are in life. In the poem, the theme is everyone gets old and becomes less active but if you love them, their memories will be with you. In the folktale, it says, “They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly, and from that day they again let the old man eat with them at the table and took better care of him.” The grandchild in the folktale changes his parents by saying that he will feed them with a wooden bowl as they did to his grandfather. In the poem, it says, “Who tells me in Spanish you are my diamond and who tells me in English you are my sky whose small eyes are string?" The grandchild knows his or her grandfather so closely and knows how he feels. This is the comparison between folktales and poems about theme and character
