Abuse In Emma's Case Vignette

In the case vignette, we see Emma and her parents struggling to find a balance in their life. Suspected of being abused by a staff member at her elementary school, Emma has to deal with her parents going through a possible divorce and a father not believing the truth by denying the possibility of an abuse. Emma and her family try to cope and move on with their life. Now that another student is accusing the same staff from sexual abuse, Emma’s case has reopened for investigation. Emma was born on time and so she was considered a healthy baby. Biologically as a child Emma seems to have no problems at all, but if you’re talking whether or not she was mentally disturbed, then there might be some upset in her life. Emma might have a bad memory when it comes to school since her suspected abuser was a school staff member. In the case it mentions that she has trouble regulating her emotions. That could mean a lot of things leading to her psychological problems. There is no mentioning of her close friends, so we can assume she does not have any. Her parochial school seems very concern for Emma’s well-being, concerned with the fact that she might be falling behind and feeling troubled at school. This also shows that Emma and her family are very religious. The fact that her parents send her to a school that is affiliated with a religion and them going to their pastor for divorce advice, shows how much they value their higher beings. Religion might be a reason that explains why her dad is having such a hard time coping with it. The fact of no sex before marriage or just thinking of the sins that happen in this world is very influential. What Emma needs now is help from social services in the exosystem on an ecological scale. It is great that Emma’s mom is reaching out and both are receiving help to face the problem head on. These agencies can help the family contact services while waiting for the case to be resolved. The mesosystem is very important in helping aid Emma. In Emma’s case, it can evaluate the life she has at home, the life she has at school and if they contribute or benefit her standard of living. If Emma had more support rather than feeling neglected than the whole case might turn out differently. The only downside to dynamics system is the lack of suppleness that just goes by the book. There is no gray area to think or hypothesize. Things are taken very literally. On the other hand, look at Emma’s case through the ecological system. It will be more beneficial to her case. It is very focused on her life details. It can be very flexible and looks in between the good and bad. It emphasizes her family and how she fits into it. This resembles the idea of value orientation that was pointed out by Parsons. He says value orientation “constitute definitions of the situation in terms of directions of solutions of action dilemmas” (Parson, 1951, pp. 350-351). The downside is that it can overlap because it is a branch based on other aspects like social theories. There is good and bad to every system.
