Academic Discourse Community Application Paper

As a Sacramento State college student, I have observed that every student belongs to different discourse communities. Every student becomes part of an academic discourse community when declaring a major or minor. Gary D. Schmidt and William J. Vande Kopple define academic discourse community as “a group of people who share ways to claim [understand], organize, communicate, and evaluate meanings.” The academic discourse communities that I belong to will help me in the future to have experience working with others. Being part of the Sacramento State community, I have perceived that I belong to two academic discourse communities that have impacted my life in significant ways. In his TED talk “How Language Transformed Humanity” Mark Pagel states that, “We can learn by watching other people and copying or imitating what they can do.” Being a program coordinator in HRL I had to ask for help when I was doing my first program and had to ask my supervisor, RLC Kyle Sasai, for help. Although he would help and explain the plans for the programs, he would ask me to attend an RA’s program and I would watch and help them out, so that I was able to use that knowledge for my own programs. As a program coordinator, interacting with students who belong to different academic discourse communities, I needed to plan events that residents could attend and be able to socialize with new peers or other residents. As I am currently a Program Coordinator, my supervisor [RLC Kyle] has one on one meetings with me every Tuesday.
