As a future educator, my job will be to recognize and accommodate each student’s individual strengths, weaknesses, and needs in order to create a classroom environment that will ensure success. It is no question that teaching will demand patience, understanding, kindness, and 110% effort all of the time. However, accommodating students with ADHD will be even more demanding, as they require a stricter environment as far as scheduling and routine goes.
Every ADHD student will need that extra attention and help inside the classroom. Searching for ways and trying new learning approaches to accommodate them will put them on the right path for success. Our focus as educators with students that have ADHD is to focus less on keeping them caught up with their peers, and focusing more on developing and finding new ways to accomplish their tasks. Daily routines are not only helpful to students with ADHD, but to all students. Building consistency and a specific schedule will develop patterns that will in turn strengthen concentration and enhance the amount of knowledge absorbed from the lessons. Many ADHD students also react very well to having visual reminders near their desk and around the classroom. These reminders, such as maybe writing a note on the board, could be useful in keeping everyone motivated and focused on finishing the task at hand. Although strict schedules and consistency are crucial to students with ADHD, so are breaks. I know from experience in tutoring in elementary classrooms, “brain breaks” are a great way to relax on the lessons for a minute and let the kids recharge. This is extremely useful for children with ADHD because they have trouble focusing on one task for long periods of time.
