Katherine Johnson overcame the barriers of segregation and gender bias to eventually become NASA s first black female engineer. Katherine Johnson was also a mathematician during this time. Another achievement Katherine Johnson did was calculating the flight path for the Apollo moon landing. These pieces of evidence all clearly show that Katherine Johnson had an impact during the Space Race.
Katherine Johnson and her female coworkers were especially impactful in the race to space and the important representation of females in the scientific field. These intelligent women were a leading cause for our success in space exploration. Katherine Johnson was an impressive black female mathematician.
Space. The -450 degree vacuum that will tear the air out of your bloodstream and organs. Being an astronaut is not job for the weak; and Mae C. Jemison is no exception to this idea. Jemison was the first African American woman to be admitted into the NASA astronaut training program, and eventually the first African American woman to enter outer space. In her lifetime, she earned a phd in medicine, trained to be and became an astronaut, founded a company and went back to spread her knowledge to others.
The description of women in history during my time as an adolescent was pretty limited besides a few key mentions. The likes of Susan B. Anthony, Queen Elizabeth, Rosa Parks, and Eleanor Roosevelt summed up the general list of impactful women within society in the 1900's. Though these women made profound strides within, civil rights, women's suffrage, education and politics the story told has always been one dimensional. The narrative regarding women in the 1900's was very single note.
One woman who received recognition for her work in science was Elisabetha Hevelius (Doc 4). It can be seen that they are working on the sextant together. Johannes Hevelius must have had an accepting attitude towards women because he let his wife help him. Another woman who was able to continue her work in science was Maria Sibylla Merian, a German entomologist (Doc 5). She has completely left society to give all her focus to research and she is allowed to do so.
Most groups sat together out of habit. For Dorothy and the west computers, segregated seating was required (Margot Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures pg. 42). The women also barely got any credit for their work, even a woman who had worked closely with an engineer on a research report rarely saw her name on the final publication (Margot Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures). Even when times were tough for the women at NASA, they still worked hard and did amazing things. For example, Dorothy Vaughan was another one of the women who did extraordinary things.
People may commonly think of Amelia Earhart as just a well known woman aviator, but her multiple accomplishments also helped pave the way for more rights and recognition for women. She helped to improve what people thought about women. “Amelia wrote ‘more than ever did I then realize how essentially this was a feminine expedition, originated and financed by a women, whose wish was to emphasize what her sex stood ready to do’” (Stone 73). Her accomplishments proved what women were capable of doing.
Dorothy Vaughan Human Computer Teacher, mother, and wife, are three words that describe Dorothy Vaughan. Many people know that Dorothy Vaughan was the one of the people to figure out the equation to launch the first rocket into space but she was so much more. As a well know human computer, Dorothy Vaughan showed society that a black women could do the same or more then men. She left a lasting legacy as one of the women who lead us into space.

Women Pilots During World War II During World War II, women had to fulfill the different parts that men could not because they were fighting. One of these roles were flying planes. The women pilots learned how to fly airplanes. In World War II women were better at flying than men.
This proves that Amelia Earhart, a female, can do just as good and even better than most men in this male-dominated role of a pilot. Next, the text stated, “For some time, Earhart and Putnam worked secretly on plans for Earhart to make a solo flight across the Atlantic. This would be the first woman and second solo person to make the flight”(Amelia Earhart:
She was one of the first female applicants to be an astronaut and ended up being the first American woman to go into space. Her feat has been an inspiration for women to pursue their dreams of STEM careers. This is why she founded Sally Ride Science in 2001. Her nonprofit organization sought to inspire women in STEM. Before she died, the organization accomplished organizing science festivals, running an engineering design competition, writing STEM books, holding the Sally Ride Science Academy, and more.
Women in the Military Many times throughout history, and in many cases today, women have been overlooked in many facets of opportunity, especially in the military. Women who have served, and are currently serving in the military, have shown how extremely important their key role is when it comes to military forces. Although it’s a huge step towards gender equality, many people disagree with women serving in the armed forces.
