Activity Description and Summary
One of the most important variables in the school community is that of having quality teachers. This is so because the quality of teaching that a child receives influences the quality of achievement that will result. Subsequently, every school strives to achieve this component through the means of teacher evaluation. Through the evaluation process teachers are better able to improve their craft. Cohan et al. (2015) postulate that “the primary purpose of evaluation must always be the improvement of teaching and promotion of better student learning” (p. 4). However, my principal uses the instrument that was jointly developed by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education and a cohort of charter schools in the Local Education Agency (LEA). This instrument contains the first few areas that we are now addressing in our school. In looking at the teacher evaluation process on my campus, one can see that it is expected to improve teacher quality in the school. This is so because the process identifies weak areas that teachers exhibit, teachers are given the necessary feedback and then a plan is set as to the improvement of the weakness. There is also a time frame by which growth should be seen. Evaluations are stored on the teachers file and are used as reference point for growth or it may be used as reference for dismissal if a teacher consistently underperforms. The race to the top “program required the District of Columbia to develop a comprehensive reform initiative built around four assurance areas: common core standards and assessments, data and accountability, great teachers and leaders and turning around the lowest-performing schools” (Race to the Top, n.d.). My school is categorized as a low performing school and so under ‘Race to the Top’ there is an effort to constantly evaluate and support in order to raise the caliber of teachers. These evaluations maybe announced as well as unannounced and formal as well as informal.
