Most occupations require some human interaction and communication, whether it be going to the bank, sitting through an interview, or even making a phone call. Sadly, many students have a fear of doing those things and offering a class to aid in the process of overcoming that fear would benefit them. The elective speech course offered only teaches students how to present speeches which doesn’t benefit most kids. A required communications course would examine different scenarios in life when proper communication skills would be necessary and teach the students how to handle those situations. For many high school students, organization is one skill they do not possess but by requiring a communications class students will be expected to come prepared to learn new ways to thrive in the real world. From gathering information for a discussion to compiling notes for an interview, students will be expected to come as prepared as they would in a work setting improving their organizational skills. Students who have higher communications skills are often thought of to have better reading and writing skills as well because they are more trained than others to see things from different sides and analyse what they read. Writing is something that will be prominent throughout life and having a deeper understanding it will set the students above all the rest. The writing skills would improve through the writing of e-mails, resumés, and letters. Often times students do not know how to properly react to things they are told; they tend to react in a negative way and become defensive. This is a poor response in the real world because it is childish compared to the many other ways they could respond.
