There are many cases where people, despite having no physical evidence against them, are found guilty of a crime. Although having DNA or video evidence helps, if there are enough pieces of information that build up against someone, that person’s lack of innocence becomes obvious. The same can be said for Adnan Syed, who was arrested for murder even though there was no physical evidence against him. In 1999, Adnan Syed was arrested and put in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. At first, Hae was reported as a missing person, but after a couple weeks her body was found in the woods. After Jay, whom Adnan was with the day she was said to be missing, goes to the police and says he knew Adnan killed her. Adnan is eventually found guilty after more evidence is found. Although some argue Adnan is innocent, after reviewing the evidence in Serial, it is clear that Adnan is guilty because of his strange behavior and actions towards Hae and the multiple stories that go against him. One major thing that makes Adnan suspicious is his weird behavior towards Hae. The first showing of weird behavior is his possessive and controlling actions. Testimonies from Hae’s friends say that on multiple occasions, Adnan would show up uninvited to her girl’s nights. When this happened, he would get mad that Hae was hanging out with her friends. In Hae’s diary, she writes that Adnan would get mad if she didn’t text him back fast enough or answer the phone when she called. This type of behavior shows that Adnan felt that he was in charge of Hae and that she needed to compensate for his own desires. After she had broken up with him, he would feel as though he had lost control of something that was his.
