According to NBCNews, "Of the people wrongly convicted for homicides more than two-thirds were minorities, including half who were African American." It's unbelievable that innocent people spend many years in a place where they don't deserve to be. This mistake probably just ruined many lives because the verdict can't be taken back. Now there might be another name added to this list of wrongly convicted, Adnan Syed. In 1999, he was accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and was found guilty due to one testimony. I believe Adnan is innocent because the evidence used to determine the verdict isn't justly sufficient, minorities were unfairly targeted for crimes, and he's psychologically incapable of being considered a murderer. …show more content…
Adnan can’t be considered guilty if there isn’t enough evidence present for a jury to make such as life changing decision. The only evidence used in this case was one testimony and the defendant’s phone records. The testimony was made by Jay Wilds who was with Adnan during the time of Hae’s disappearance. He stated that Adnan planned everything ahead of time and asked him to help after her death. Jay admitted to helping with the disposal of the body, but he’s testimony doesn’t sound trustworthy. After every interview with the authorities, Jay’s story would change in either small details or vastly different. In episode 4, Jay originally said that he found the body at Best Buy parking lot, but now it was a strip on Edmondson Avenue. His story changed in order to minimize his involvement because his relationship with Adnan isn’t worth going to jail for. The other piece of evidence was Adnan’s phone records which were used a confirmation to Jay’s witness statement. Most of the calls add up to what he said, but the phone was in the possession of Jay while Adnan killed Hae. The phone was brand new so why leave it with an acquaintance? This seems to be the only physical evidence because during the trial they didn’t mention Adnan’s DNA being on the body.
