The Advantages of Year Round Schools
Summer break is awesome, but after the break you have to start back up with school. When you walk into a math class they say “Quiz today, let 's see what you remember” and then you think to yourself how you forgot what you learned last year. Why should the teachers have to reteach the material due to the long break ("Year-Round School.")? Before I start, I just want you to know that year round and traditional schools is when you have the same number of days but at year round school days are spread out more and you get more days on the breaks. Studies have shown that if students who have English as their second language they will benefit from year round schooling. Children of immigrants may not be able to hear English due to the long summers. Students that are in year round schools have better test scores than a person that is in traditional school (Mcfadden). This evidence proves that you could do better in your classes if we have year round schools. The website states that “English as their second languages benefit the most from year- round education.” which means it would benefit the most from year- round education because traditional schools you could take ESL but year- round schools you won 't forget the stuff you learned over the long break as you would in traditional schools. According to Huffington Post website it says that from a recent survey the NSLA did, it said that teachers have to reteach stuff when summer break ends. Another survey was done by the teachers they found out that 66% of the time teachers have to reteach stuff from the last year for 3-4 weeks and 24% of the time teachers have to reteach stuff 5-6 weeks. Johns Hopkins was studying Baltimore schools and they found out that there was 2 months loss of reading performance while it was summer break. The students that are going into the incoming grade forgets the math skills that they did last year. NSLA surveyed the teachers and they said that students could go to summer school to prevent student forgetting what they learned that year (Klein). This evidence proves that in traditional school you could forget stuff over the long break. The websites states that “66% of the time teachers have to reteach stuff from the last year for 3-4 weeks” which means that most of the time teachers have do the material over again for 3-4 weeks besides going on to the chapters/units they have to go over by the end of the school year. The website states that “24% of the time teachers have to reteach stuff 5-6 weeks” which means that most of the time teachers have to spend 5-6 weeks reteaching stuff when they could teach new material.
