Growing up, I have had my fair share of medical encounters, and was even on state insurance for most of my life. This meant that exceptional care was not always in reach, as I had to visit overflowing medical facilities and was unable to choose the better treatment options due to finances. Due to this, I advocate for my patient’s daily at work by calling insurances and working out the logistics of getting them the care they need, or helping them find resources if we hit a dead-end. During the Progressive Movement we had 3 presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Each of these presidents had some very good reforms that have made this country be how it is today. All of these things that presidents have done tie in with a goal of the Progressive Movement, there were 4 goals. One- Social Welfare, Two- Economic Reform, Three- Moral Improvement, and Four- Fostering Efficiency. These goals were accomplished in many ways.
At the same time, advocacy is fundamental to any social work position. Knowing how, where and when to speak or act on behalf of a client is critical. Additionally, one important perception that I am taking away from my field placement is the concept of partnership in social work. If I could choose to work in any career field for the next 30 years I would choose to be an activist. Activism is a vital part of creating change that will enhance the lives of every member of our society. I say member because citizenship is not required to treat each other with dignity and respect. We are all human beings with thoughts, feelings, and families, and we all have the need to feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves. Our differences are a huge part of what makes this world so beautiful, and our similarities are what bring us together and make us so strong.
