Emotions and moods can indeed determine a lot for us in the workplace and can either make or break our day. The affective events theory (AET) plays a key role in determining our satisfaction on the job, and it associates closely with emotions and moods and the opportunity to perform. Your citing of Ohly and Schmitt’s observations certainly validates the AET and the opportunity to perform. Whether formal related to work or school, or informal close friends or family. The effect of being part of a group can in many ways influence our behavior and performance. In my professional career, I worked in groups that were efficient in completing tasks, projects, and provided innovative solutions to problems. Notwithstanding, it is not without its unique challenges to ensure the groups are effective. The success of groups is also dependent on individuals comprising them. The challenges of group behavior, autonomy, and the job characteristic model explained as it relates to my professional experience in a U.S Navy Strike Fighter Squadron. As a Quality Assurance Officer (QAO) in a fighter squadron, I have the opportunity to manage a small task group. Robbins and Judge (2009), defines a task group as people working together to complete a job task and are not limited to their immediate hierarchal superior. (Robbins and Judge) These core job dimensions are skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback. The job dimensions explained are as they apply to the position of the QAR previously discussed. The skill variety scores high, as it requires individuals that fully qualified within their respective area, utilizes cross-training and expertise to improve their flexibility within the unit. Their task identity is high due in part to their high skill variety, because of this, they have the flexibility to inspect various aircraft systems, perform audits, and examine programs beyond their general field. Task significance is the degree to which a job has a substantial impact on the lives or work of other people. I too rank this high, typically being one of six in the group, QAR’s have a tremendous impact on maintenance actions and safety of over 220 personnel in the unit. Being senior in rank and experience, the QAR enjoys the satisfaction in receiving a high level of autonomy. Lastly, a QAR receives feedback as a result of performance and effectiveness of the squadron maintenance department and aircraft meeting flight hour and mission
