An Army White Paper: The Profession of Arms

According to the report An Army White Paper: The Profession of Arms, the term profession of arms refers to a vocation comprising of experts who are certified according to the stipulation of the ethical application of land combat power. The experts are designed to serve under the civilian authority and are entrusted to defend the Constitution as well as the rights of the American people (p. 4). The human resource profession abides by this concept, but has an aggregate responsibility to make sure that all the members of the Army are ready to go battle. This makes them available to concentrate fully on the duty of defending their country and their people. Achieving this noble objective requires Human Resources Sergeants to be and act out of professionalism. The key concept of the work of human resources professionals is achieving effectiveness rather than pure efficiency. The major requirement of human resources is to fulfill the four core competencies of the Adjutant General Corps. The core competencies of the Adjutant General Corps are Man the Force, Provide HR Support, Coordinate Personnel Support, and Conduct HR Planning and Operations (FM 1-0, 2014). As leaders we have the knowledge, and the expertise in the specific profession. Leaders are able to engage the members in their work on their duty.
