Writing Assignment #1- ESSAY An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms Although not viewed by all as a Profession, the U.S. Army is quickly changing that stigma. The Profession of Arms has been in existence for over 200 years and Human Resources has been one of the longest standing assets of that Profession. A Profession, in my words, is a specialized focus of expertise (i.e. doctors, lawyer, engineers, etc.) A Profession is a field that requires investing many years of studying and perfecting an art. The U.S. Army has a long standing education system dating back to the nineteenth century with The Army War Colleges and The Army Officer Corp. The Army has since expanded its field of education by adding schools for the junior enlisted and non-commissioned officers and removing the idea that in order to make the U.S. Army a Profession, Soldiers had to be part of the Officer Corp. By expanding the education available to all elements that embody the U.S. Army roles of Profession’s Leaders is more balanced. It opens doors for all junior enlisted, non-commissioned officers, warrant officers and commissioned officer’s alike. Army carry a deeply developed culture that is well rounded by Army Core Values and Soldier’s carry those values with them in all aspects of their lives to include their professional development. Professional development goes hand in hand with what is required of a Profession. All Professions require some level of continuing education. The U.S. Army has implemented a continuing education system that is more advanced than the civilian education system; molding what is desired of a Profession.
