The introduction of FM 1-0, “Human Resources Support”, Department of the Army (2014) states, “Meeting the goal of providing efficient and effective HR support relies on multi-functional HR leaders who focus their knowledge and skills in support of the Army’s most important asset—its people.” (p. 1-2). This knowledge and expertise is what makes the Human Resource (HR) Sergeant a vital part of the US Army, US Army Reserve and the Army National Guard.
So, what does it mean to be a profession? The Army White Paper, “The Profession of Arms”, Training and Doctrine Command (2010), states, “professions produce uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work” and they “earn the trust of their clients through their ethic.” (p. 2). HR Sergeant’s work is never routine or repetitive. The HR Sergeant is the “go-to” expert when it comes to human resource operations from the top-down in all components of the Army. This knowledge and hard work is if the HR Sergeant did not have the trust of the Command, Soldiers and their families. Poor planning and operations will cause the balance to shift. A shift in balance during war times will cause a shortfall in necessary needs of the Army. Another way an HR Sergeant can affect the balance of the Army is by keeping the “Army’s culture, climate and institutional practices” and passing them on to future Human Resource leaders. A good leader leads by example and teaches their subordinate the correct way to keep the Army a professional
