Introduce the issue (Try to find a striking story and/or stats and/or facts) Paul McCartney once said ,“ If slaughter houses had glass walls, we would all be vegetarian.” After reading this quote one might ask themselves this simple, yet complex question, is this true? Agriculturists are taught to advocate for their beliefs, which includes animal welfare. As stated in the quote, everyone would begin a vegetarian diet if they saw the horror of a slaughter house. With hateful words spread everyday about animal welfare and how producers are treating their animals makes it hard to continue to show how much of a strong industry it is. Agriculture is being targeted for the way they treat their animals before and during the slaughter process. Being an agriculturist, it is very heartbreaking that people think that as a whole, the industry abuses livestock, when actually they are the ones who helps life flourish. In the midst of all of the hatred, many would agree that there are some instances where animal are being abused, and not treated correctly. Those certain instances are nothing to blame the whole industry for. That would be like blaming a whole bunch of people for what one person did. Animal welfare may be a confusing subject to comprehend and completely understand, that is why I am here to clear things up. I have learned through the years that many people are uneducated about the methods used for handling, antibiotics, and the slaughtering facilities. I know a little about each but I am not a full expert just yet. Based on Temple Grandin’s research on animal welfare, throughout the years, they have created new livestock handling techniques, and slaughter improvements. These improvements include different kinds of stunning to insure animal safety and they do not suffer during the killing process. They have also engineered different alleyways to the kill floor so that the animals are in a low stress situations while at the slaughter plant.
