In the essay “Angry Fathers” by Mel Lazarus, the author talks about a part of his life, a day with his friends. Artie, Eli, and him were bored and decided to do something they haven’t done, something new, leave their mark on the wall of the new casino. Mr. Biolos the owner appeared furious, he would tell their fathers; Artie’s father arrived first, when he found out he took off his belt and whipped Artie. Eli’s father showed up next, he knocked Eli off his feet with a slam to the head, he kicked him on the legs, buttocks and back. By this time the author was nervous of his father reaction, when he arrived his reaction was a surprise for the author; instead of corporal punishment, his father punishment was a lesson.
Throughout the history of American Literature, there have been hundreds of influential pieces which have left a mark on other writers. The book “In Honor of David Anderson Brooks, My Father” by Gwendolyn Brooks utilizes a unique writing style, theme and American values. This text was sharing her father’s story and personality to the reader before he passed away. He presumably lived alone and maintained his own home.
In the poem called “On Papi” it said “Just because your father's present, doesn't mean he isn't absent” How she thinks and makes decisions is reflected in her connection with her father. When she’s getting punished by her mom, her dad just goes with it and doesn’t defend her. An example of this affecting her is in the poem “In Front of My Locker” when she says, “He’s not going to throw a punch. He’s not going to curse or throw a fit. He’s not going to do a damn thing.
The book, “Nothing But The Truth” by AVI follows the story of a ninth-grade student named Philip Malloy. Philip Malloy is generally a good kid who is a great runner. The story starts with Philip working out and getting ready for the track season. He has been working for months for the upcoming season until the track coach, Coach Jamison, has to talk with him. Philip is told that he has a D in his English class which is a failing grade according to their school's handbook.

Firstly, it begins to show that John Purcell is a selfish man when his wife, Helen, tells him that their son, Johnny, does not own the complete Boy Scout outfit. This is proven when he says ‘Listen, Helen, for God’s sake take him downtown with you tomorrow and get the rest of the Boy Scout outfit. I don’t want the goons down at the church thinking I’m too cheap to buy him one’ (65).
In They Say/ I say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein informs the audience of the basic moves in academic writing through text, illustrations, and templates. Their main model in this book is they say/I say template, in which it helps writers to develop their arguments by paying attention to what others are saying, and engaging with a response. The authors goal is to demystify academic writing, and return it to its social and conversational roots. The authors want the writers to engage in the ideas of others. These concepts from this book, will help make a stronger, supportive argument.
In Nothing But the Truth there is one thing that stood out to me throughout the entire book. The whole book is full of lies. Philip Malloy tells lies about everything and to everyone. He lies to his parents, the principal, and even to a reporter that is interviewing him. Throughout the book we continue to see the lies play out until the very end of the book when Philip finally decides to tell the truth.
Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson is an Indigenous mythology-based story that follows sixteen-year-old Jared as he struggles with his powers, relationships and overall life. The theme of family, specifically the decisions and roles of Jared's family, significantly affects his personal growth. More particularly from the actions of Maggie Moody, Phil Martin and Nana Sophia. Maggie Moody, Jared's mother, affects Jared's morals and how he feels about violence, Phil Martin, Jared's father, affects Jared’s emotional maturity, and Nana Sophia embodies the feelings resulting from the abandonment of a family member. Maggie's violent approach to life has desensitized Jared to violence, making him less emotionally vulnerable since violence requires a lack of empathy.
Sometimes individuals get so determined to reach their goal they become lost and find their selves blind to their original desire in the process. Throughout AVI’s nothing but the truth, Philip Malloy and his narrow minded attitude bounces from wanting to be a part of the track team to becoming allies with his homeroom teacher, Miss Narwin. Phil becomes distracted overtime which leads towards him making choices that end up affecting other character’s daily lives. Phil’s hate for Miss Narwin forces him to get kicked out of her class due to him humming which turns into neither Phil nor Miss Narwin being able to attend Harrison high school any longer. Philips regretful decisions ultimately lead to a undeserved loss of a career and a developed well
Jared Martin struck me as an interesting and relatable protagonist. I enjoyed his portrayal's complexity and authenticity as I read the pages. I identified strongly with Jared's life's journey, struggles, and exploration of his own identity. He was an interesting and compelling character because of how he handled the difficulties that came his way, which drew me into his story. The novel's insightful and accurate portrayal of Indigenous characters and their experiences was what really caught my attention.
Culture is the building block for life. It sets society's standards, it sets our own standards, and everything we know is all because of our culture. Culture is a way of thinking, a way of behaving and learning. We express our opinions based upon our beliefs, and define ourselves by what aspects of our culture we choose to show. Culture's impact on someone's perspective of others and the world is greater than its other influencers because it can change how you interact with people, your ability to change, and your opinions of the world.
It is Luke’s fatherly love for his daughter that leads to his dilemma between pursuing the truth of doing what is just and right and demonstrating his love for his daughter. " A Father's Story," by Andre Dubus shares that the love of a father toward his own daughter means that he will protect her even if the process calls for him to misplace a part of himself. To protect his daughter, the father is forced to undergo challenges, a battle between his mind and his values. In the story, Luke Ripley, the protagonist, drops his core principles and ethical values deliberately to protect his daughter. In the short story, “My Parent’s Bedroom,” by Uwem Akpan, the most important message expressed to the reader is that it 's human nature for a mother to protect her children to the best of her ability. In the beginning of the story, Maman tries to protect Monique and Jean by telling them things to do that will keep them safe later. She has “kept us indoors since yesterday,” (1). She realizes how dangerous things are, so she wants to keep them sheltered and safe inside. She instructs Monique not to “turn on any lights tonight,” (1) and “remember to lock the door behind me,” (5).
Seamus Heaney uses a forced to grow up theme, and this type of theme helps the reader understand why Heaney is acting the way he is. Being treated like an adult out of the blue, and during a difficult time, can overload someone to a point where they are withdrawn from their surroundings. “By old men standing up to shake my hand, Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest” (Heaney stanza three and four), he is uncomfortable with being the center point for everyone. These strangers see Heaney as an adult, he is the eldest, and doesn’t show any strong emotional sadness during this difficult time for a family, so these people are also seeing him as the strongest member. He is also seen comforting his mother, which will support the idea of him
Why Obesity is a Problem There has been a lot of discourse over the topic of obesity and why it matters. The most controversial issue that people tend to bring up is whether people are responsible for their weight problems, or if it is the company's’ fault. These companies do not necessarily have to be fast-food, as long as they are responsible for distributing the majority of the food that people in America eat. The country that is struggling with obesity the most is the US, which is also home to companies known to use a lot of mass-production for their foods. Fast-food companies are responsible for getting their consumers obese due to the budgets of consumers, how close fast-food restaurants are to someone's location, and lack of nutritional information.
