Crime prevention is a hot topic throughout politics, criminology, and classrooms across the nation. However, in order to prevent crime we must first understand why it occurs. Albert Cohen developed a theory called Status Frustration Theory to explain why young males may engage in deviant behavior. According to the theory, the value of a person in society is based on middle class values, which are enforced in the American school system. This theory is the basis for the summer and after after-school mentor program I designed to help prevent adolescents from commit crimes called, “Helping Hands.” My program is an extension of Cohen’s theory because I will also include young females in the crime prevention program. This program will be available to elementary, middle, and high school school students who regularly attend class, and attempt to further their education; each program will be separated by age group]\. By making this program free to its members, students are able to take advantage of this program regardless of financial status; in fact, this program is based off of working-class values and not the middle class. “Helping Hands” will pair all of its members with volunteers from the community. These volunteers will help tutor and teach the students in this program and will provide them with a role model they can feel comfortable with. When the students show up to the program they will have the opportunity to go over lessons from their textbooks, participate in interactive and learning activities, play sports, and have a meal with peers.
