In our society today, African American males between the ages of 17-39, rate highest in becoming risk victims. (Karmen, Pg 93) African Americans as a group rate highest as well, much of the information that we can access establishes a volatile community, where crimes occurs constantly. People in these communities, understand their youth tend to attract and be attracted to unsavory behavior. Many inner-cities are laden with crime; many of the crimes are committed by people between the ages of 17-39, much of that has to do with, learned behavior, poverty, peers, gang activity, and very little education. The money they can make selling drugs, robberies, theft of all kinds, open up all types of possibilities for extreme violence to occur, however, the money appears much more attractive than working a minimum hourly job. Another good example is prostitution, they have the ability to make an awful lot of money every day, granted they are not able to keep much of it, but they are not interested in normal work. Many are drug addicts, and must provide large amounts of money to pay for their habit. Every time a prostitute gets into a car with a stranger, she is placing herself in grave danger. When you exist in an environment that supports this type of behavior, you are always placing yourself in danger. Sure crime occurs everywhere, but it thrives in these communities. Anytime, you live in an area that is riddled in crime, you have an increased chance of becoming a victim, and likely more times than once. These criminals prey on good, decent, hardworking people, as well as the elderly, and the weak, many of which have lived their entire life in these neighborhoods, and will never leave.
