Alejandra Romer has asked me to write a letter of reference for her in regards to her admission to your esteemed university, and it is my absolute pleasure to do so. Alejandra is a student in my Creative Writing class, and she is, without a doubt, the most talented writer I have come across in the decade I have spent teaching English Language Arts. From her first essay, I knew this young woman had the capacity to be an accomplished author. Her use of metaphor combined with artful syntax is matched only by professionals, and she has managed to do something no other student has ever inspired me to do—she has inspired me to write again for myself. Alejandra’s talent has earned her my highest recommendation as a writer and a student.

Inspired by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting “In Bed: The Kiss,” she writes, “My fingers sketch against worn sheets/ An amateur waltz between my pointer and middle finger/ One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.” When she finally reaches her beloved, “Archipelagos of stars and heat/ Are born and die behind my eyes and I am on/ Fire.” She writes about love and longing, but there is a maturity about it that transcends the theme. Even the poetry exercise in which students were to write from a child’s perspective showed sweetness mixed with profundity. She is full of intellect and inquiry. Her voracious appetite for learning is just as impressive as her poetry, and it is rare that I encounter a student who absorbs lessons the way she does. She often helps me understand the purpose of an assignment better by having completed it, and I take many of my cues from her.
