Alexander Graham Bell created an astounding tool that will change the world forever. Bell had a conception on trying to talk to people without being near each other. This machine can transmit sound using electricity. People have added on and improved this machine for the past 139 years. It went from just being able to talk on it, to being able to go on the internet and play games and much more. On March 10, 1876 the machine was made. This amazing creation is known as the telephone. The first words on the telephone was to Bells assistant Thomas Watson. The switchboard came out in the 1800’s, which is when one cranks a handle and it connects the person to an operator, and then they connects one to the person they are trying to reach. After the switchboard came out, operator jobs became very popular because almost everyone was using the telephone by that point. About a quarter million people were operators for AT&T in 1946. In the early 1900’s, the rotary dial phones which is where you have a circle that spins and if you put in an eleven digit number by spinning the dial to the numbers then you can call someone. This must have had to be very annoying because if you mess up you have to start all over again spinning the dial around and around until you get it right. Subsequently, the invention of the automatic call switching became popular, which was invented in 1889 but wasn't used until 1914. People could make long-distance calls between the United States and England in 1927.(Goddard 9) Then, in 1908, there were newspapers that were saying that there were possibilities of wireless phones. In 1950, the cell phone started to be composed. The first computerized telephone was in 1976. A few years later, a majority of the calls was switched electronically.
