The 1970s was a time of technological advances, government injustice and movements towards equality. Between doubts about the U.S. president, Richard Nixon, changes in communication due to the cell phone, and America’s steps towards equal rights, the 1970s was a decade of surprise and perseverance. The Watergate Scandal is when Nixon’s associates broke into the Democratic Associates National Committee at Watergate Hotel. Richard Nixon was convicted for participation in trying to cover up the criminal activity. His impeachment was set in play for April 1974, but Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. Nixon became known as the only president to resign. Gerald Ford took over as president, and soon after pardoned Nixon. Richard NIxon tried to recover his image by writing books and speaking speeches. Having a portable cell phone was a luxury that didn’t become common until the 1990s and was used mostly for business reasons. The cell phone is an invention that hugely impacted today’s society. Now, almost everyone has a cell phone and uses it constantly throughout a day. The design of a cell phone has also changed since the seventies. The first phones were roughly two pounds, now the average phone is 113 grams. The use of a cellphone has also changed since the 1970s. Portable phones were first used for mostly business calls, and possible leasure communication, now phones are also used for communication but also games, music, calculations, photography, reading, and writing.
