Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Alexander Graham Bell had two brothers that unfortunately passed away from tuberculosis by the time he was 20 years old. Bell’s mother was deaf and his father and grandfather were famous in England for their work in a field of speech development called elocution. This inspired Bell to study speech and communication as well. Alexander Graham Bell wanted to invent things that would help people and his best idea was the telephone as he thought it would help deaf people hear and now his telephone helps everyone talk to each other.

Bell’s idea was to turn human sounds into an electric current that would be sent through a wire. Another machine would receive the electrical current and that machine would turn the current back into sound. Alexander Graham Bell began to work with Thomas Watson to build the machines in 1874. Alexander and Thomas were a good team as thomas was a skilled builder while Alexander understood sound and electric current. Alexander finally figured out how to build his machine on July 26, 1874 and he first named it his electric speech machine. The electric speech machine was actually two machines. The machine to turn sound into the electric current was called the transmitter while the machine that turned the electric current back into sound was called the receiver.
