The chapters of our textbook, America: A Narrative History, written by George Brown Tindall and David Emory Shi, takes us on a historical yet comparative journey of the road to war and what caused the American Revolution, an insight into the war itself, and a perception to what life was like in America after the war was over. Guarneri gives us a global context and a comparison between the North and South Americas in the dividing issues of labor, slavery, taxes, politics, economy, liberty, and equality. The road to the American Revolution consisted of several events, which escalated to the war that began April 19, 1775, as the tensions between the American colonies and the British Government advanced towards breaking point.

After reading Chapter 5 in “The American Yawp”, it is clear that there were many social, economic, and political consequences of the American Revolution. The American Revolution is arguably the turning point of American history as it resulted in somewhat of a significant, positive change in politics, economics, and society as a whole. However, from 1775 to 1800, the effects of the revolution on the American society were subtle as most principles glorified by revolutionists contradicted the examples set forth by colonial reality. This may come from slightly from a place of defense for Tocqueville as he is part of the aristocrat class in France. Tocqueville isn’t wrong completely though as many of the people of the time were largely very uneducated about the world and to expect them to be able to understand situations around the world is asking too much of them. Yet this largely not their fault as much of them did not have access to education. Tocqueville also notices in the United States that many people don’t look up to the wealthy or a king anymore but still look up to people who appear virtuous to them.
The main difference between the American and French Revoultion was that one successfully converted to a democratic government and one did not. The French Revolution was not successful in forming a democratic government due to France’s history of a monarchy, economic issues and divison among its’ people. Unlike America, France had a long history of sole rulers and dictatorship which made the change to a democratic government much more difficult and ultimately impossible. America’s motto of “all men are created equal” (Doc A) was the complete opposite of France’s dividing estate class system. The third estate consisted of peasents, common people and the bourgeoisie, the second estate belonged to the Nobles, and the first was the home to the Clergy.
In “Lanval” by Marie de France, Lanval is a hero, though parts of his journey are sometimes hard to identify as herioc. Lanval’s story follows the basic elements of the monomyth, or Hero’s Journey, when read closely. He begins his journey in a vaguely unsatisfying ordinary world where he is unappreciated and where “he could see nothing that pleased him” (52). Leaving that world, he enters into the world of Queen Semiramis, wherein he is not only beloved of the Queen but assured that “he would never again want anything / he would receive as he desired” (135-36). When Lanval is challenged by his Lady “if this love were known / you would never see me again”, he accepts his quest readily (148-49).

“I have tried to see not differently but further…”(Tocqueville, 1835) was Alexis de Tocqueville’s conclusion to the introduction of his perennial classic text Democracy in America, and adumbrates to the reader of his modern ideas and observations that were to follow. At the same time, he measures the progress of society through its relationship with equality and liberty. In this paper, I will highlight Tocqueville’s use of equality and liberty to compare the past and the modern, and establish his views on the effects of these concepts with society and each other. Finally, I will put forth that Tocqueville does not favour one concept over the other, but notes the complex relationship between the two and the importance of the co-existence of liberty and equality for a society of people. To begin, let us build the base case to compare with and look the past as defined by Tocqueville, with emphasis on equality and liberty.

He found it’s concepts to have unique strengths and weaknesses that he believed could be the inspiration for the new government of post-revolution France. In Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville provides an analysis and critique of American civic life. During his travels across the country, he discovered how different America was from Europe, particularly France. While the majority of Europe consisted of aristocratic countries with hundreds of years of history, America was a young democratic country. Most notably, he observed that America was growing in equality. The growing equality becomes a presupposition of individualism and isolation, but despite this inevitable growth of equality, individualism and isolation can be minimized.
