Benet uses allusions from Psalm 137 in By the Waters of Babylon to show the damage knowledge can cause. In his story, he shows that people are evil and are capable of doing bad things, using the content from Psalm 137. Benet also illustrates that when people gain more knowledge, they gain more power over society and people. Our society as a whole learns loyalty and devotion from Psalm 137. If knowledge can be bad, people disagree and use vengeance against one another. Benet uses allusions to show how people are bad and capable of doing bad things. So much technology was made in society, which makes everything more dangerous. The Great Burning is an example. The Great Burning was the burning of the city. This burning killed everyone and destroyed everything around it. Many bad things now relate to the burning, and now the danger is everywhere. “ it is there that spirits live, and demons-- it is there that there are the ashes of The Great Burning. (1) the “Great Burning” causes many things to be forbidden. Nobody is allowed to now go near “the ashes of the “Great Burning.” Technology and society have both caused this to happen. Bombs tore apart the city which now has everyone living in danger and fear. People have to watch their backs constantly and understand their limitations. “ After a time, I myself was allowed to go into the dead houses and search for metal. so I learned the ways of those houses-- and if I saw bones, I was no longer afraid.” Society is now full of danger and fear.
