In South of Broad by Pat Conroy the theme is appreciate people for who they are. Leo has a very diverse group of best friends that are not accepted by the community at this period of time. Trevor is gay, Sheba likes to sleep around, Ike and Betty are African-Americans in a town that still has not accepted blacks, and Niles and Starla are orphans from the mountains. This group is not exactly a perfect group for most families back in the 60's. In chapter 15 Sheba needs help looking for her brother in San Fransisco who is dying of AIDS.
The main characters in the book Is a boy named Nick,and a girl named Summer. Nick is brave,smart, and sneaky. Summer is intelligent,trustworthy, and friendly. Nick finds out about a time portal from his grandpa. This story takes place in Detroit.
The book Rainbow High by Alex Sanchez is about three boys named Nelson, Kyle, and Jason are seniors in high school. As they are getting ready for college, they have to find a way to come out. Kyle and Jason are together and Nelson has a boyfriend named Jeremy, sadly after discovering Jeremy is HIV positive and Nelson is not, this causes many conflicts in their relationship, and Nelson has to try and fix it. Jason decided to come out to his coach, but is now worried he will not get his scholarship to Tech, he has to find a way to come out to everyone but still be eligible for the scholarship and win championship for basketball. I think the author does a good job creating a story with good realistic problems, and does a good job wrapping up.
The novel Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick is a story about a typical family in a present day town. Steven, the oldest kid in the family goes through a tough time in his life when his little brother Jeffrey gets leukemia, a type of cancer. Steven’s parents are also affected. The dad starts to not talk to Steven, and his co workers. The mom has to stop working and drive Jeffrey to the hospital often for treatments.
My "fake" family! In the 1930's a lot of families were separated. In the book Bud, Not Buddy the main protagonist, Bud, lost his mother when he was six but later on he found a caring, loving family for him. Some of the people in the families died. Most of the children in the family were orphaned.
The Dollar Kids by Jennifer Richard Jacobson has an amazing conflict development. The main character is Lowen, who deals with depression as his best friend Abe dies in a shooting at Giorgio's and Lowen blames himself for it. Then when he thinks he can’t stop thinking about his friend’s death, he picks up an article that states “Here in Millville, you can win the prize of a one dollar house!” This makes Lowen think that he can escape the bad memories of his town. When his family and him go to Millville, they realize that the town is not as great as the paper showed.
I read Paper Towns by John Green. The novel carries 305 pages and stars Quentin Jacobsen a teenage high school senior and the supposed girl of his dreams Margo Roth Spiegelman. The novel takes place in Orlando Florida. I chose this book because it is widely known and has been suggested to me frequently by friends and family. Also, I have seen many people at school read the book.

The novel Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld follows the life of Lee Fiora in her four years spent at a boarding school called Ault. Ault is a prestigous high school in Boston which is made up of wealthy kids and very few kids on scholarships. Lee is one of the few students there on a scholarship since her parents could not afford to pay for Ault. She struggled from her Freshman year to her Senior year of high school trying to find who she really was and how she could fit into the community there. Lee struggles with her identity at Ault and begins as a responsible, smart, social girl but then becomes confused, lonely, and embarassed.
