TITLE: QUIET ISN’T SO BAD Thesis: American culture more readily accepts the extroverted person over an introverted person. Purpose: To inform my audience on the personality types of introverts and extroverts. INTRODUCTION I. How many of you are familiar with the terms “introvert” and “extrovert”? A. Extroversion and introversion are the North and South of temperament, and we all fall somewhere on this personality spectrum. B. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung coined the terms “introvert” and extrovert” in his 1920’s work, Psychological Types, he was the first scientist to give meaning to these polar personalities. Furthermore, we generally associate with people we feel like we can relate to, “Birds of a feather flock together.”] III. Therefore, our personalities also shape our social styles and the environments we live in. A. Extroverts are the people that add life to the dinner party and laugh generously at your jokes, pretend to be self-confident, dominant, and in great need of company. Extroverts think out loud and on their feet. They prefer talking to listening and rarely find themselves at a loss for words. And occasionally, blurt out things they never meant to say. Extroverts need to recharge when they don’t socialize enough. (Dembling, 2012, pp. 109-112) B. Introverts in contrast, may have strong social skills and enjoy parties and business meetings, but after a while, wish to be alone. They prefer to devote their social energies to close friends and family. They listen more than they talk, think before they speak. And often feel like they can express themselves better in writing than in conversation. Many have dismay for small talk, but enjoy deep discussions. Introverts recharge by being alone.
