In Greek Elegiac Poetry: From the Seventh to the Fifth Centuries BC, edited and translated by Douglas E. Gerber, several poems written by a Spartan citizen named Tyrtaeus give an inside look at the ideas behind Spartan society. It is apparent in these poems that men in the state were completely and utterly devoted to the defense of their civilization. While the United States Military is not quite the same as Spartan armies, many of the qualities Tyrtaeus describes in Spartan warriors are apparent in modern US military philosophy. Tyrtaeus’ poems show similarities to and evidence of Spartan warrior code in our military today, although at a much less extreme level. This paper will discuss these influences as well as differences between the two fighting forces.
Rhetorical Analysis of General Douglas MacArthur’s “Duty, Honor, Country” Acceptance speeches can often demonstrate the strength of a leader and the eloquence of a speaker and Douglas MacArthur proved to be a fine example in his Thayer Award acceptance speech. General Douglas MacArthur’s “Duty, Honor, Country” is memorable because of its effective use of rhetorical appeals, rhetorical devices, and other elements. During the time the speech occurred, the United States was engaged in a Cold War with the Soviet Union that would greatly test both world powers. Both the Soviet Union and the U.S. sought to develop a variety of nuclear weapons (including hydrogen bombs and missiles).
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Ulrich von Gradwitz is one of the two main characters in The Interlopers, feuding over a plot of land, each man believing it is rightfully his. Throughout the story, he shows both honor and devotion. In the beginning of the story, when faced with his enemy, Georg Znaeym, he shows honor in the face of temptation. “Each had a rifle in his hand, each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind.
Honor is something deep down, everyone is striving to obtain. It can be defined in many ways, and forms, nevertheless they all come to the same conclusion. Honor is thinking of others first; it is giving your life for others, and not worrying about yourself. It is doing something just for the action itself, not the reward. American honor is being selfless, it is very much the same in different cultures and countries, although some people argue that it has stayed the same, it has drastically changed over the years.
“Duty, honor, country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be,” (MacArthur). General MacArthur gave this speech when he was accepting the Thayer Award for his service in the military. He was stating that honor should be our main focus when in doing what we want in our lives, and that we should strive for those goals. Honor is defined as high respect; esteem or a privilege. Honor has changed so much over time that it is completely different not only in our American culture, but any other culture in our world today.
Therefore, through the terror and triumphs in the world, the American Dream is achievable because of the desire to make something of one’s self can push them forward, which shows how dreams can come true. One aspect of the American Dream that stands out is the determination within those who believe in the American
During this last year I spent countless hours after school between practices for all of the different teams and events that we had, such as the jingle bell jog, a 5k jog that our battalion has hosted every year for the last 5 years, drill practices and competitions, as well as practices for color guard events at basketball games, football games, and school assemblies. I also spent time participating in physical training after school, and joined the raider team. Because of this training, I got in better shape and actually ran in a few 5k races over the last year. I also was part of our honor guard and participated in practices and events related to the honor guard. I also shot in competitions with our rifle team at Montgomery Bell in Nashville,
that being in UNA’s Honors Program is the right thing for me. I believe that my commitment and dedication will definitely strengthen the Honors
If I’m accepted and able to graduate I will make sure every single teacher in my school believes that every student that enter their room have endless possibilities in life. I trust blindly that the University of Arlington will help me accomplish my goal on
Being the president of the National Honors Society chapter at my high school, allowed me to experience what it’s like to disagree and collaborate on ideas for things as simple as shirts, to big events such as cancer walks and fundraisers. Being a part and in charge of a group as large as our NHS, allowed me to understand what it was like to not only take what you want into consideration, but what 90+ members want as well. This enlightenment began when we had our first officer meeting for the new school year. Topic of discussion was one that would be a breaking point for us: deciding if we should get t-shirts and polos, or just polos.
Being awarded the Alcorn Achieve scholarship has tremendously help cut down the cost of going to college, while saving my family some money for my other siblings to advance their education. I love being able to further my education so that one day I’ll be able to use my talents to avoid poverty. It is the key to a locked door, just waiting to be discovered. One day, I want to reflect on my younger years and know that I am responsible for something that was done to give me a great start in life. I want to be able to make my family proud of me as well as myself.
Honor Code “It's important to understand that while honor is an entitlement to respect, and shame comes when you lose that title, a person of honor cares first of all not about being respected but about being worthy of respect.”, once said by Kwame Anthony Appiah, the author of the book The Honor Code. An honor code in schools is a great way to teach young adults self-discipline. It helps students gain more respect for themselves and others. Students become more responsible when they follow an honor code. An honor code makes students into self-disciplined, respectful, and responsible adults.
I grew up in a neighborhood in Oak Cliff, which is mostly Hispanic but from different nationalities, such as from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras. I am of Mexican decent and both my parents who are from a small town in Oaxaca. Few of my neighbors were white and black and did not know much about our culture, however, my father always invited them to attend a cookout or family party. My uncles did the same thing in their neighborhood in south Oak Cliff because they were only Hispanics. Once the neighbors were enlightened it created a bridge and broke stereotypes.
Honor is upholding ethical and moral choices, and maintaining an excellent reputation. For a student, it can be quite difficult to maintain a virtuous moral compass. This is due to an abundance of different factors, like peer pressure and high expectations. In my own life, I maintain my own honor by not taking the easy way out. It is easier to cheat on tests than to actually spend time learning the material.
Throughout high school, I excelled in the classroom and I pride myself in this accomplishment. I currently on course for receiving an Academic Honors diploma come graduation at the end of May. An academic Honor diploma requires each student to take at least three years of a foreign language, at least 2 Advanced Placement classes, and all honors courses for each class, if provided. Occasionally, keeping up with all these high level classes posed a challenge, especially with extra curricular activities, but staying focused on achieving superb grades for collegiate purposes earnestly reassured me to continue to work hard.
