With every person we meet we hold power over one another in ways that often go overlooked. These things affect how each individual is treated and lives their lives. In the story, Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, a work of science fiction, both the main character Dana and the child version of her ancestor, Rufus, exert power over one another with Dana holding the most. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of power is “possession of control, authority, or influence over others.” In this story, power is an important theme.
Power is the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way, Power is not only strength it is a human relationships, power is the authority one person holds over another. In the play The Crucible,written by Arthur Miller. Three characters Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, and Judge Danforth. All want to gain power as the play goes on. But it takes a turn and influenced them negatively.
What is power? How are the people in your life powerful? How are you yourself powerful? Being powerful is having the ability to control one’s (yourself) or others lives. To Kill a Mockingbird is about a rape trial between an African American man and a white woman, of course Mayella won the trial.

But first what is Power? When researching Power words such as authority, control, direct, command and influence all appear. These words all support the following statement “Power is the ability to influence and control the behaviour of others.” The problem with power is that it often leads to those in power abusing it. As Lord Acton famously quoted “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
In the song “Roar” by Katy Perry It talks about how someone built them self back up after someone tears them down. The song is also about how to be confident in yourself without someone having to tell you that you're amazing. Part of the songs message is you don’t need someone or something all you need is yourself. Multiple literary devices are used in Katy Perry’s song “Roar.” One of these lyrics is “Dancing through the fire” which is an example of imagery because it paints the picture in your mind of someone working through tough times.
Throughout term 4 we have been focusing on That Sugar Film by Damon Gameau. Damon Gameau is an Australian actor who directed and took the lead role in the documentary That Sugar Film. Whilst the documentary is biased, this is necessary in order to educate the audience effectively. The key techniques that Damon Gameau utilises in this documentary in order to persuade and position the audience to take his side are his interviews with experts, the shocking images showing the effects on your teeth, and last but not least, the most effective technique is the use of himself as a guinea pig in an experiment.

The North American settlers didn't come from Europe with friendly intentions, rather to become more wealthy and powerful. The way you use power in a situation can have a positive or negative impact on an individual, community, country, nation, or even the world. In the short story “Miss Temptation” by Kurt Vonnegut, he describe how power can impact an individual way of thinking of others due to past experiences. Power can anything one allows to have a dominance over their lives. It is the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.
Power, a major influence throughout all of history. Wars, love, and countries all began with the same concept: power. Sometimes, power is used responsibly; other time the platform of prestige authority is used in a manipulative way. Power can stem from an individual, but it can also be rooted in memories that haunt people forever. In The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini writes an impactful novel, showing the brutality Afghanistan goes through as power is corrupted in the country.
Power is the ability to actor do something in a particular way. People who have too much power and abuse it, and turn their power into a negative power. Fear and tyranny are abused by people with power creating a negative effect on society. Leaders with a huge rule of power will abuse their role as a leader by creating a fearful environment.
Power can be defined as the possession of control over others. Throughout history, there has been a constant struggle over power. The matter of who should dominate over others and who should not have sparked many debates in America. Kathryn Stockett illustrated in her novel, The Help, the power struggle in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi. The fictional novel follows a maid named Aibileen as she tells her story in an attempt to fight for the hope of change in her community.
The Allure of Perry in “Dark Horse” “I knew you were, you were gonna come to me and here you are but you better choose carefully, ‘cause I’m capable of anything, of anything and everything (Perry).” These are just a few of the alluring lyrics featured in Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” music video. The scene is set in ancient Egypt and Katy Perry is portrayed as a powerful Egyptian ruler/enchantress. In the video, Perry draws in male suitors and after getting what she wants from them such as jewels and edible delights, she no longer cares for them. In the “Dark Horse” video Katy Perry appeals to a young audience through the use of elicit diction, Egyptian symbolism and an enchanting tone.
Some would say power is the ability to control a group and have them become your followers while maintaining a strong leadership role. The two books, Animal Farm and Lord of The Flies use power through the two main chiefs of the novels. The book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is about a group of animals that declare a rebellion against the owner of their farm. They take the farm over, and make Napoleon, the main character who is also the dictator of the book, take leadership of the farm. On the other hand, the book Lord of The Flies, by William Golding is about a group of boys who are stranded on an island with no adults.
Power as conceptualized by critical theorists. Power is one of the words that holds great effect. It is defined by Webster (2015) as “the ability to control people or things; a person or organization that has a lot of control and influence over other people or organizations”. In general, a person or organization that holds power has authority over others. Thus, power is conceptualized in the organizational communication by critical theorists.
