Reading may seem like an run of the mill thing where you laugh at the funny jokes, glare into the abyss when the text possess a provocative quote. To Mike Bunn the author of “How to Read Like A Writer,” has a different interpretation of what reading should be. Mike Bunn emphasizes that reading should be more than just context, he argues that you need to question the authors’ choice of words, literary devices, sentence placement, in order to be able to become better readers and writers ourselfs. In Bad Ideas about Writing, Ronald Clark Brooks writes that everyone can be a writer because he believes that everyone’s experiences and perspectives are worth writing about. He expresses his belief that a good writer is not necessarily defined by their credentials or publishings. However, he acknowledges that there is a sort of stigma around writing that may discourage novice writers and offend veteran writers. In Brooks’ essay, he attempts to take an empowering and supportive approach in explaining how anyone can be a writer. He also says that even in writing classes, where there may be more structure and rules to follow for writing, optimism and a positive outlook make all the difference.
His idea is simple and easy to understand, ". . . the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its clearest components." (234). William Zinsser wrote seventeen books in his career. Zinsser works as a writer, teacher, and editor. He currently teaches at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and in his hometown of New York at the New School. Zinsser showcases his style to teach the reader the principles, methods, forms, and attitudes of writing creative nonfiction in his book On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction.
While he believes he is more creative as deadlines approach, any college student can agree with him that it is not smart to wait until the last minute. Next, he advises writers to walk away sometimes, but continue to think about it. Then, when inspiration does strike, he will “jot it down. Even while I’m driving, I’ll jot things down.” His approach to writer’s block is one that I think other writers can learn from.
In William Zinsser's essay "Simplicity" he discusses and emphasizes the importance of meaningful writing. Moreover, Zinsser refers to American writing as "clutter" writing, due to "unnecessary words, circular constructions, pompous frills, and meaningless jargon." In addition, Zinsser believes that ample wording may confuse the reader, and cause them to lose their ability to focus. Furthermore, causing the reader to become uninterested and unable to comprehend what they are reading. Similarly, Zinsser mentions that if the reader fails to read the entire article, essay, magazine, or book, that it is the authors own fault, not the readers.

In the article The Qualities of Good Writing by Jacqueline Berke, Berke explains qualities a writer must know to provide a good quality writing. She begins with the idea that when writing, it is better to be concise and to the point than have lengthy paragraphs. Berke emphasizes that in order to provide the best quality writing there are three qualities the paper must have to be considered good. The first quality is economy. This means the writer should never include unnecessary sentences and unnecessary words in a paragraph.
In ‘’ How to Write a Memoir ‘’,William Zinsser gives advice on how to write a memoir. The most specific advice he gave was ‘’Be Yourself ‘’, ‘’Tell your own story ‘’ , and ‘’Speak freely ‘’ (2,4,6). That advice help writers to tell their own story and how they want to tell it . Some memoir is told from a child point of view . In Maya Van Wagenen memoir ‘’Popular’’ supports Zinsser writing advice through his use of child point of view , an honest storytelling , and a structure of small memories .
In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.
This author, Dr. Brock, uses a whole new way of writing that differs greatly from that of Zinsser’s. Brock, in the story, relies solely on the happenings of his daily life to journalize his thoughts and feelings. He uses a much more relaxed method of writing, seeing as he does not pressure himself into completing the task immediately. For example, if the day is not going well he will save the writing for when he is feeling much more alive and productive. Brock also states that if he is not feeling completely committed to write, he will take a break or go for a walk to refresh his mind.
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
Some writers put detailed notes, others just few jotted words and still others plan in their heads. When writers plan, they think about three main issues; the purpose of their writing, the audience they are writing for and the content structure of the piece. The second stage is the drafting; it is the first version of a piece of paper of writing. A writer can have several numbers of drafts. Editing is the third stage in the writing process.
