The article “Being One flesh: Understanding Divorce in the Bible” by Jace Draper explains the different ways that Divorce can be perceived in the Bible. This is considered to be a difficult topic due to the fact that there is no specific answer as to whether divorce is something that goes against the bible or not. There is no straight forward reasoning as to why or why not; only stories that can be perceived in many different lights that may alter people’s thoughts on divorce as seen by the bible. It takes two to make a stable and strong marriage, however it only takes one’s actions for a divorce to occur. This leads into the explanation of “One flesh”. One flesh signifies the bond of two people in marriage, but it also shows the break in stability in the vows they made through the story of Adam and Eve. “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame” – Genesis 2: 23-25, NIV. When God created the man he took a piece of his rib in order to create a woman. They are therefore bonded, meaning that she is a part of him. Adam had found his “bone” meaning his woman and they had no shame in each other. This is supposed to be how a marriage is viewed in the bible. Being able to see the naked view of the other person and seeing no shame in it or feeling selfish or any hidden agenda to use against the other person. Many people seem to give up very easily in their marriage and do not fight for the person that they love. In my life I was taught to stick with the person that you chose to be a part of you. The story of Adam and Eve resonated with me for that reason. In Adam and Eve, Eve was created from the rib of Adam. They were made to be together and that is something that is special. When you marry someone you must show them the best and worst parts of you. If someone chooses to love you and become a part of you in that sense then the two people should work to always keep the relationship alive. The exception to this rule would be from resentment or abuse. In the story of Adam and Eve their relationship in a sense was too far gone. They stopped caring for each other and only cared for what they wanted. This can lead to more issues and maybe violence in a relationship which would be a reason for leaving the situation. This relates to every one of my readings because the article shows that no matter what, God will always have love for all. No matter what has happened God will always have love for anyone whether they get divorce, become transgender, choose homosexuality, excetera. I believe this relates to the UIW mission statement as well as the catholic intellectual tradition because it is a teaching of something from the bible. The UIW mission statement is to educate people and this educates on what is
