The article "The Struggle to be an American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong it is about a Chinese girl who did not want to learn or speak her first language and chose just to speak English. However, being bilingual has benefits like communication, jobs opportunities, etc. I chose to be bilingual for two reasons. the first reason is communication. Communication is important and if we know more than one language, it is possible to communicate with more than one group of people.
In the article, “Have we literally broken the English Language? ”, the author Martha Gill depicts a fact that the word “literally” has changed its semantic meaning from literally to figuratively. Gill’s perspective that people need to “avoid [the word “literally”] completely” indicates her prescriptive attitude towards the word’s meaning change since she focuses on correcting the rules how people should use a word. At first sight, prescriptivism emphasizes that people should follow rules learnt consciously in school to speak and write a language. At the beginning of the article, Gill provides the definition of the word “literally” based on Google to show that many words have developed their original meanings in recent days.
Today, America is known as the melting pot because of the huge array of different races, cultures, and languages from around the world. There are over 14 million households in America where English is not the primary language. Within the 14 million households are people who are going to want an education, and jobs which allows for a very competitive society. Primary English speakers will need to learn a second language in order to compete with immigrants that already know two or more languages. There are more qualified teachers and resources put in to place for Spanish speakers. I firmly believe that Bilingual Education programs help students acquire English, while preventing them from becoming academically deficient. A good education in your first language will positively impact your ability to acquire a second language. I have experienced this benefit firsthand while learning Spanish and becoming bilingual. I believe it would be incredibly demoralizing to be forced to learn a second-language without having an opportunity to develop a solid base in your first language.
