The article I read was called “Weekends in Jail for Rape? Why people get sentenced to ‘weekend jail’ by Corey Johnson” This article starts off with Molly Shattuck who raped a 15-year old boy in Georgetown, Delaware. The former Baltimore Ravens cheerleader walked out of the courtroom last week even after raping a 15-year old. She was only sentenced to “48 alterning weekends at the SussexVilation of Probation Center.”
According to the research of Kimberly Lonsway and police sergeant Joanne Archambault, when an individual is raped in the United States, 96% of the time the rapist dodges the crime. The majority of these rapes do not go through the prosecution process and when they do, less than 0.2% of these perpetrators spend time in a prison cell (Krakauer 121). The main cause of this ongoing problem is the ineffective and unfair representation of rape victims by the justice system. Jon Krakauer argues this point in his novel, Missoula: Rape in a College Town and the Justice System, using narratives as his main focus of support. Through this use of narratives, Krakauer appeals to logos, encapturing the various actions and perspectives of those who played
This shows that these women are from a lower class and has less morals compared to white women. A conclusion that can be drawn from intersectionality is that everyone experiences different types of intersection based on their circumstances. Some people may experience it more often, while some may not have experienced it at all. Those who know and understand these intersections may adopt multiple identities to live a better life. Those who doesn’t know or understand these intersections are more likely to stick to their normal identity because it was never
In the book, Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in College Town, by Jon Krakauer, the reader delves into how rape and sexual assault are treated in the town of Missoula, and the University of Montana. As the reader, we are informed on how the university, the police department, the district attorney’s office, and the community reacted to these rape and sexual assault allegations. We see how the criminal justice system has failed the victims, and are forced to live with what happened to them, while their assailants are free of any burden. The law is set in place to protect people from victimization, but when the men, in this book, are not legally held accountable, then any woman, or man, is more susceptible to victimization. It is interesting
There were no statistics or remarks in the documentary that were just focused on women of other race and class other than middle or upper class white women. Explain My
Political correctness has infected today's culture, evident in the universities of America and the mainstream media. Camille Paglia stresses the importance of free thought and free speech, that is not bound by any ideology. In 1991 Camille published an article, Date Rape, where she explains the responsibility and liability of women in scenarios regarding rape. Overall, there are many aspects in which I agree with her. Firstly, she states that “women infantilize themselves when they cede responsibility for sexual encounters to men,” [1].
Chicago is widely known for its architecture, food, and the big bean. Unfortunately, the city is also known for its high crime rate, making it one of the most dangerous cities for women. In addition, active gangs pose another threat to Chicago residents. These factors endanger the lives of many men and women.
In Mapping the Margins by Kimberle Crenshaw, Crenshaw explains to the readers why women are more subjected to problems of violence. Race and gender have a huge part in this. Women of color, however, are more subjected to these type of things. Including rape, abusive relationships, homelessness, etc. Women of color are part of subgroups which increases their chances of being part of violence.
People don’t understand that when a criminal says they “couldn’t resist” that, in terms of rape, that it’s used as a defence. Any other crime and we call that a confession, and there’s something wrong with that. The issue is rape culture; a concept where the idea of rape is pervasive and normalised within society. Things under the title of rape culture include victim blaming, the over-sexualisation of females, and the idea that society is better off with a patriarchal system.
When questioned about rape, especially most women, they might think or even picture a stranger coming out of a dark place to assault someone. But in reality there’s more to it. According to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, “About half of all people who are raped know the person who attacked them. This is known as date rape — forced sex that can happen not only on a date, but also somewhere like a party with someone the victim may know, like, or even be interested in.” Furthermore, social critic and feminist, Camille Paglia, has been discussing this persisting issue about date rape with a personal stance that many women may disagree with.
“You shall have courage”, Said Poseidon to percy. In the fantasy novel, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan, Percy jackson, son of Poseidon, is accused of stealing the zeus’s lightning bolt. When actually Another demigod, Luke, actually stole it. Rick Riordan, the author, wants to convey the theme of to have courage through many scenes of characters having courage. Courage is an important to have with you when making a hard decision.
I hope that during my undergraduate years at George Mason University I will be able to investigate the problem affecting many colleges that is date rape drugs. Rape on college campuses is a horrifying epidemic that our country is facing. According to healthresearchfunding.org “Up to 90% of college campus rapes occur through date rape incidents.” Almost every day on the news there is a new story about a woman who was a victim of rape or sexual assault, and most of the time the perpetrator gets away hands free. A major reason why date rape drugs are commonly used is because they are easily slipped in to drinks at college parties and are undetectable by the victim.
When someone makes an oath in court, it says that one must tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. However, we know that there is never a whole truth, in anything. Colleges and Universities face this problem more than others with situations like date rape. To understand how serious date rape is, one would need to be aware of the history behind it, how to prevent it, and how it happens.
Slaves faced extreme brutality and Morrison focuses on rape and sexual assault as the most terrifying form of abuse. It is because of this abuse that Morrison’s characters are trapped in their pasts, unable to move on from the psychological damages that they have endured. “Morrison revises the conventional slave narrative by insisting on the primacy of sexual assault over other experiences of brutality” (Barnett 420). For telling Mrs. Garner what they had done, she was badly beaten by them, leaving a “chokecherry tree” (16) on her back. But that was not the overriding issue.
According to a study performed by the United Nations (Fulu), 70 percent of men who have sexually assaulted somebody do so because they believe that they are sexually entitled. Forty percent of those men who admitted to sexually assaulting a woman stated that they were “angry” or wanted to “punish” the victim. In this study consisting of 10,000 men from varying countries, half of them do not feel guilty. 5,000 men do not feel guilty for sexually assaulting women. 5,000 men that each felt entitled to a woman’s body and violated her privacy.
