When someone makes an oath in court, it says that one must tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. However, we know that there is never a whole truth, in anything. Colleges and Universities face this problem more than others with situations like date rape. To understand how serious date rape is, one would need to be aware of the history behind it, how to prevent it, and how it happens.
For example, the history of sex crimes unquestionably gives a “reality check” to the situation. One in every five female students that attend a college or university have been sexually assaulted at some point. Alcohol is the most commonly used substance in drug-facilitated sexual aggression. (___) Mostly because it’s common for college students to do and doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to do. Prescription drugs like sleep aids, anxiety medication, muscle relaxants, and tranquilizers may also be used by perpetrators. These are more serious, because they hit quicker and can be hidden. Street drugs, like GHB, rohypnol, ecstasy, and ketamine can be added to drinks without changing the color, flavor, or odor of the beverage.(__) The perpetrator then takes advantage of the victim’s voluntary use of drugs or alcohol by intentionally forcing them to consume drugs without their knowledge. After consuming an unknown substance, depending on what it is, the initial effects of a drug can go unnoticed or become apparent very quickly. Nausea, loss of bowel or bladder control, difficulty breathing, feeling drunk when you haven’t consumed any alcohol or very limited amounts, sudden increase in dizziness, disorientation, or blurred vision, sudden body temperature change that could be signaled by sweating or chattering teeth, waking up with no memory, or missing large portions of memories are all signs that one may have been drugged.(__) Although it isn’t easy knowing if something was slipped into your drink, at least knowing these symptoms can
