Marijuana Mayhem In some countries, marijuana is legal and even considered as a safe drug. Americans have debated over the legalization of marijuana in many states and the outcome was scattered. It resulted in some states legalizing it, some not, and some only making it legal for medical reasons. Marijuana has become a nationwide issue because it causes controversy over whether it is helpful or harmful. Marijuana is viewed by some as a banned drug that leads to worse drugs making marijuana seem harmful. Due to modern studies, and actual usage of medical marijuana, the opposing views on marijuana has been shaken. Marijuana can also be viewed as a healthy drug used to relieve the pain of ill patients. The government is losing money by not being able to tax a high demand product being sold in the country (Moffatt). If marijuana is taxed by the government the prices would change and the demand would change (Moffatt). If the government wants the dealers to quit selling the drug on the black market, they need to make sure not to raise the tax on marijuana too high (Moffatt). If the government legalized marijuana, it could help control growers/dealers from using dangerous additives that could be slipped into the drug, making the drug even safer. The government could require Medical Marijuana classes to be mandatory to pass in order to receive a certificate. The certificate allows sellers to sell the drug legally. If a student fails/does not take the class and continues to sell the drug, the act is illegal and should result in an arrest if caught. A small recovery class should also be provided for ill patients using this drug as pain relief. The class would help patients with withdrawals even though the drug is probably about as harmful as tobacco or alcohol (Moffatt). The crime rate in Washington’s five largest counties from 2012-2014 show that three of these counties had a major decrease in crime rate once marijuana was legalized (National Institute on Drug Abuse). At this point, not only are less sellers of marijuana being put into the prisons because it is legal, the smaller crime that has caused many arrests would be demolished leaving more time for the police to imprison those who have committed harsher crimes. The crime of selling marijuana illegally may put a dealer in jail, but it does not stop the drug from being sold. People are still going to buy and use it whether it is legal or not. The government should step in and try selling it through permeants to make the drug safer. Also, by reducing depression and anxiety, marijuana decreases the chances of homicide as well. Alcohol can be more influential to crime rate than cannabis. Marijuana contains an ingredient called THC (Miner). THC actually helps to decrease violence and aggressiveness. Considering that marijuana typically calms a user, alcoholic beverages such as beer can cause violence when used because it intoxicates users with chemicals that can cause some to be extremely violent. In some cases, a drinker can be completely unaware of what they did while under the influence.
