Conflict is when a character in a piece of literature faces something that opposes their desires and needs. In the selections, The Boston Girl, and Sybil Ludington’s Ride, the main characters struggle against their parents for their wellbeing. The girls, Addie and Sybil, feel like they can do more than what others say, but their parents feel it is dangerous and do not believe in them. The protagonists do what they believe in and have to face their parents and prove them wrong. In the residential school, Saul is abused both mentally and physically, witnessing the continued deaths of his Indian classmates. Fortunately, Saul was able to keep himself sane through hockey.
In my story, “All The Stars Denied,” the first way my character’s traits cause conflicts is her stubbornness caused the texas ranger incident. For example, “ A ranger grabbed at me, and I punched him instinctively. Then I kicked him in the shin for good measure.” This shows her stubbornness caused the Texas ranger to grab at her. Internal conflicts are those that take place within the mind of a person, while external conflicts take place between a person or group and another entity of some kind. Internal conflicts often have to do with resolving a moral dilemma or making a decision. External conflicts often deal with obstacles that people face in completing accomplishments or in lengthier battles over situational outcomes. In S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders," one of the internal conflicts that the main character, Ponyboy, faces involves his relationship with his brother Darry. Their parents have died, leaving Darry in charge of keeping the family together.
“Pancakes” by Joan Butler made the best use of conflict because it was essential to the development of the protagonist and overall theme of the story. At first readers see that Jill, the protagonist, has a desire for perfection and is extremely narrow-minded on her perfectionism. The first type of conflict Jill endures occurs as she reminisces her break up with her boyfriend. Unable to finally take notice of her wrongdoing, she defiantly tells him that “[she hopes he finds] a messy, inconsiderate girlfriend who can never find her purse or her car keys … [and has] no aptitude for planning” (Butler 212).

Conflict is the essence of any literary fiction. The main goal of an author is to tell a story that keeps the reader interested. At the story’s core, conflict is the momentum of happening and change and is crucial on all levels for delivering information and building characterization as well as building the story itself. Conflict is the source of change that engages a reader and keeps them interested. In a story, conflict and action does what description and telling of feelings and situations do not.
