“Now you hear what the house has to say…” This is the first line of the poem, Insomnia by Dana Gioia. This poem is about what happens at night when there is no one around and you are only left to your thoughts and the noises around you. This poem is a great representation of what it feels like to wake up with insomnia and be alone with only the darkness to keep you company. The language Gioia decides to use, fits very well in the poem. He uses descriptive phases like pipes clanking and water running in the dark to describe the way it feels at night. He also gives objects in the house a ‘voice’ and lets them speak. Many voices have escaped you until now and voices mounting in an endless drone of small complaints like the sounds of a family
