Why Memoir’s Are Useful

Marjane Satrapi tells the reader about her life during the Iranian Revolution in the book Persepolis, which is a memoir. A memoir uses personal experiences, knowledge, and memories to tell a historical story. History can be depicted in many manners; textbooks, biographies, autobiographies, storytelling, memoirs, and many more. Each one gives the reader a different insight into the historical event. The author is in the position where he/she can reconsider past experiences with more time to think about what exactly happened. This enables the author to recall the slight parts of the situation which he/she might have been missed in the past. Also, the author can think thoroughly about how the events or figures he/she experienced in the past affected him/her and how they agree with new thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and actions later on in life. This point of view makes sense because memoirs could be taken as a one sided opinion. However, a memoir’s purpose is not to submit one side over the other, but just the author’s personal accounts. This memoir can be used to see how the Iranian Revolution affected a family against the new regime and new laws. Although it does follow a girl and family against the Revolution, it still informs the reader of all the historic events that were affecting the whole country. Since a memoir is just a personal account of his/her life, it would be difficult to include viewpoints from both sides of the point of views. Therefore, memoirs are useful because they are still being used as an aide to learn history through a personal experience. A memoir is important because it allows the reader to see a point of view through personal accounts of the author. The reader learns about how the Iranian Revolution affected Marjane Satrapi’s family and community in Iran.
