The thematic concept I am choosing that relates to me in a way for this final writing assignment for The Great Gatsby is visions of America. This relates to me because i want to do something when I am older, make money, own a big house with a nice car, have a family. Like Nick, it it isn’t going to be easy to become rich. He was poor while in west egg lived in a small house. Nick was trying to succeed the American dream, he was reading books on how to do his job the best he could.
In “Chapter 20” of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster examines the intertextuality of “Sonnet 73” from Shakespeare, “The Book of Ecclesiastes” from The Hebrew Bible, and Hotel du Lac from Anita Brookner, to explain that “for as long as anyone’s been writing anything, the seasons have stood for the same set of meanings” (Foster 186). People believe “that spring has to do with childhood and youth, summer with adulthood and romance and fulfillment and passion, autumn with decline and middle age and tiredness...,” and “winter with old age and resentment and death” (186). In the lyrical novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald applies the seasons of summer and fall to add rich, symbolic meaning to the events that unfold
The hit song “1000 Years” by Christina Perri, has many ties to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character Jay Gatsby, from his novel The Great Gatsby. One of the strongest ties is clear when the speaker in “1000 years” says, “I have died everyday, waiting for you / Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years” (Perri 8-9). In the song, the speaker claims that she has loved the listener for a very long time and has been patiently waiting for that person’s arrival. Similarly, in The Great Gatsby, after Gatsby answers Daisy’s question of how long it has been since they have seen each other Nick says, “The automatic quality of Gatsby’s answer set us all back at least another minute” (Fitzgerald 92).
Differences matter. Both versions of The Great Gatsby are very similar, but also very different. The differences, though, play a much stronger role in how people understand and feel about the book. The similarities are similarities for a reason; they matter in the book, not with how people view the book. The differences, however, say a lot about how the directors and actors feel about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book.
Fireworks are going off, people are jumping into pools. Musicians doing their thing. In the older movie all we see is people dancing and jumping into the fountain. We don’t see all the extra detail like thats in the first one. So I believe Fitzgerald would prefer this scene of the newer movie than the older movie cause of the good detail put into
A prime example of that is Nick; in the novel, he is portrayed like an upright man as he specifically commended: “I have been drunk twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon” (Fitzgerald 29), this shows that he doesn’t enjoy drinking and celebrating parties in comparison to way that he said that he’s only been drunk twice in his lifetime. Nonetheless, the movie suggested that he’s not the kind of person that everybody expected seeing that he enjoyed all the parties that he went to & surprisingly lacked a little bit of control on his simultaneous actions. Intrinsically, the movie placed insistence on Nick’s life unlike the person shown in the book. Another character who is different apart from Nick is Jordan; almost from the start of the movie, we immediately learn that Jordan Baker is an athlete.

The movie however, also followed the book very well and even used direct quotes from the book helping you to understand the point Fitzgerald was trying to make. Markowitz the director made many good decisions in this adaptation as well as a few costly mistakes that made the importance of the book and plot line of Fitzgerald’s book.
