Richard A. Muller’s “Nuclear Waste” addresses the problem of the storing of nuclear waste in the Yucca Mountain that costs billions of dollars that future presidents will have to deal with. He explains that the government will not be able to keep it underground for 10,000 years as the future is constantly changing, and that there could be a possible leakage due to the earthquakes that happen around the mountain (Muller 207). In “They say/I say” by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, they put together the important moves in writing that is most effective towards the reader. While reading "Nuclear Waste," it's easily seen that Muller uses some of these moves that are talked about in the "They say/I say" book that produces an effective article.
Being in English 101 has impacted three different types of writing processes: drafting, revising, and editing. Before I started this class, I never made drafts; I only did pre-writes and the final copy of the essay. Now, I do the pre-writes, then type it and make the draft, and then fix any errors in it. Another writing process that has improved is revising because now instead of reading what I wrote myself, I let my friends, classmates, and teachers read it to see if they understand what I’m writing and if they see any errors. This makes my editing process easier because I know what mistakes I made.
When I realized that I was going to be put into Expanded English 100E; I was a bit resentful, because I felt that I didn’t need to be in this class. I felt as if USM was trying to say that I wasn’t good enough to get put into the traditional English 101 class. Once in the class my feelings changed after a while, because I got placed in this class with a terrific English teacher that wanted nothing but the best out her students. This Self-Evaluation will explain my process in which I became a better writer and progressed through Expanded English 101. I will provide evidence from my last two essays; Lynda Barry’s: Sanctuary of School and The ACT Uncovered.
I learned a lot from each essay and assignment I did, which I believe has helped me to be a better
My experience in English 1010 was great. My writing skills were very poor at the beginning of the semester. I did not know how to write correct sentence structure. I had great difficulties making my sentences flow smoothly and clearly. I was not able to edit a paragraph for mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
I began my year with four classes and one of them was my fourth block class, Dual Enrollment English 111. Typing papers and discussing interesting readings from the textbook has always been a good end to my day. Through the many English classes I have taken, this class has taught me the most so far. The experiences that I have in this class will guide me through college with a stronger understanding on how to write effectively and efficiently. Through Dual Enrollment English, I have learned how to write a well thought out paper while managing my busy schedule and have learned many lessons along the way.
Last fall semester was my first semester in college. I took English 111 with the hope of gaining some initial experience with college writing. I am an international student, so it was a struggle at the beginning to understand and meet the expectations of my professor, as well as to catch up with the pace of my peers. However, looking back to what I learnt in English 111, I think the difficulties did not prevent be from having an amazing experience. I was able to learn how to analyze a text, make an argument and support my argument.
English 101 improved my writing. I learned how to distinguish run-on sentences from fragments. Application of careful thinking and thorough explanation on an analysis. Usage of commas to maximize influence. Learned to develop ideas further.
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
I believe that I am decently prepared for the college level reading and writing that takes place within English 101. There are several aspects of learning that I feel confident in and it creates a sense of preparedness in me for this course. There are a couple points to learning that I have yet to grasp and this leaves me feeling ill-prepared for the course. Flexibility and openness are two of the habits of mind included within Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing that I feel confident in, while persistence and engagement are two of the habits of mind that I believe I need a little more practice with. Having confidence within a couple of the habits of mind is a great start towards me becoming successful in English 101.
It showed that trying my best wasn’t enough and that I need to learn how to write essays better. I need to put hard work into learning how to write good essays so the next one I write can be even better. Another section I enjoyed doing or improved at doing is looking at the literary movements. My favorite literary movement that I learned a lot from was the Dark Romanticism section.
As Julia Kristeva stated in the Stabat Mater, the maternal image of the Virgin Mary does not provide an adequate model of maternity, therefore with the Virgin as a role model, the maternal body is reduced to silence. Moreover, she apparently implies interrelations between desexualizing and silencing women (Kristeva 145). Thus, the name of the poem doubly attacks the Catholic rules—if women are reduced to be mothers, a homosexual love act is an act of disobedience, and the detailed description if the act with “thighs” and “back” and “your breasts and belly” (Dorcey 1120) emphasizes that the scene in the poem is purely lustful, it is an act of desire and passion, what contradicts the religious model. The line “Blood on our thighs” may have two
While I do know some of the rules, due to my previous English teachers in school, there is still much that I do not know. But, through the course of this past semester I have learned a great deal about different and new rules. This class has taught me a great deal about writing and how to correctly write an essay. Writing is a system of many rules and is a way for people to express their creativity. This class has given me much room to express myself creatively and gain more knowledge.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
