Many educational reforms and policies have come about since the “No Child Left Behind” Act. Such acts have been established without looking at the long term effects or cost. They simply provided the government with a way to distribute or take money away from an already broke education system without establishing any safety nets for schools that do not meet the requirements for AYP. In the articles, Top Ten Issues to Watch in 2016 and The Economics of Education the reader is provided with many examples of cause and effect relationships between government funded programs and the success that these initiatives may or may not bring. With the federal government mostly out of the picture, our state will be able to decide what is working and what needs to be changed in order to have a higher percentage of our high school students graduating and becoming productive citizens.

In the article, The Economic of Education, Dana K. Rickman is presenting evidence of how a low high school graduation rate has a major economic impact in an area. Such hardships come from having to provide healthcare, food, and shelter for the uneducated and unemployed person. As pointed out in the article another factor is that “many parts of the South are trapped in an economic cycle known as low-wage/low skill equilibrium”. Georgia students are not ready to meet the growing demands of a job that requires innovative thinking. Students success has a direct impact on the growth and development of a stable economy. Administering test is time consuming and costly. There has to be a why and how when reporting assessment information. With the new intuitive, move on when ready, high school students will have an opportunity to take an assessment that allows them to move up to the next level upon passing the assessment. The issues mentioned in the article all lead back to how costly it is for a state to fund programs and manage school accountability all while dealing with issues of poverty, failure rate, teacher effectiveness, and lack of prior education before entering
