Barry Alford, the author of Freirean Voices, Student Choices is an English professor at Mid Michigan Community College. In this specific piece of writing, he states that “particularly when they find themselves following some formula organizing the topic instead of the trail of their own thinking” (P. 280). Meaning that students just do exactly what they are told to do instead of venturing out and making it their own writing. Alford talks about how students need to have more in depth and creative forms of writing rather than being boring. A major thing he believes is that students need to hear themselves and their other classmates before they start writing.
In 1847 Eliza Stacey, a frontier farmer’s wife, writes a letter to her father-in-law Edward Stacey for financial aid after her husband George had been arrested and taken to jail. Her family was deep into debt and needed help. As she was nearing the end of her pregnancy, she was swamped with stress and work. This letter attempts to persuade her father-in-law to help her family once more by stressing the time and urgency of the situation, establishing how he is the only who can help them, and taking off blame from themselves. Stacey tries to procure her father-in-law’s sympathy for her dire situation by stressing the time and urgency of it.
Murray sets aside a paragraph for each component that writers look for in their drafts, "information", "meaning", "audience", "form", "structure", "development", "dimension", and "voice" (228-229). Each paragraph is brief, only covering the basics of the subject, but serve the greater purpose of being unnecessary. Murray deliberately makes this portion inconsequential in order to illustrate the importance of editing. Immediately afterward, Murray's words become interesting and involved, telling you only what you need to know. As Murray puts it, "Each sentence, each line, each clause, each phrase, each word, each mark of punctuation, each section of white space between the type has to contribute to the clarification of meaning."

An essay is a piece of writing that take a stance on a certain subject and is catered to a specific audience. In elementary school, the sandwich format was taught for essay writing where the two buns were the introduction and conclusion with the inner fillings being the supporting paragraphs. In high school, more in-depth essay techniques were taught with compare and contrast, and persuasive essays being the most common. Generally, most essays follow the standard sandwich structure. However, there are essays that break that all-too-common format with ‘What Makes a Great Screenplay?
Donald Murray explains in his article that “The writer must learn to read critically constructively, to cut what is bad, to reveal what is good”. As I write my first draft, I’m the writer. I’m gonna write or type what I feel like is right. As I finish my essay, I become the reader. I am gonna read my draft as if it’s somebody else’s paper and take out what is needed and keep what is good.

I took the time to write out an outline for this essay to help manage the chaos that is my writing, unlike my other essays for the course. As I said before, I have learned to question the structure of my paragraphs. For example: when I was revising the Composing Process essay, I noticed that a set of paragraphs could be rearranged and partially rewritten to improve the structure and make the essay flow better. However, I would argue that my Justification video assignment demonstrates my assertion better than my revised essays. From the beginning, I laid out a clear path that my Justification video needed to follow.
Every student wants to be successful. However, the success of students around them causes them to exert even more, and sometimes unnecessary, work on their classes. This includes binge studying for a test to be sure that they do better than the students in the class, or as mentioned by Zinsser, “writing ten-page papers to impress them [the professors]” when five-page essays were actually assigned (Zinsser). Because there are students that do this, others feel the need to add more writing to their essays in order to reach the levels of those students.
