Throughout my college years, I have seen many athletes that come from the high school level to college where the get paid to play. These certain people are getting an easier pathway to get to college for their sport. Not everyone gets the opportunity as the athletes do. The image of this is that the students are getting college free as in scholarships. Everything like their dorms and tuition are paid for. The colleges will pay for their tuition, their dorms and even their sport equipment. According to an article written by Allen Sack called “Should College Athletes Be Paid?” who talks about how his college was paid for. He says, “When I played football for Notre Dame in the 1960s, the NCAA had already compromised its half-century commitment to amateur principles. In 1957, after years of intense internal debate, the NCAA caved under pressure to subsidize athletes, and voted to allow athletic scholarships. It was at this point that commercialized college sports started down the slippery slope toward open professionalism” (Sack 9). Scholarships are there for players that have been good at their own sport and been scouted by teams. Scholarships are worth more than a brand-new car per athlete. This includes dorm, tuition, board and book payments. These athletes are getting a good chunk of money in addition to scholarships and tuition to play their sport they’re committed to. An article by Nathan Noble and Maddie Weiss of the Scholastic News “Should College Athletes Be Paid” states “not all colleges make enough money from sports to pay athletes. If these schools had to pay football and basketball players, they might have to cut sports that bring in less money, like tennis or swimming.” (Noble and Weiss 7). If they were, they would be paid. For example, an athlete who makes a big chunk of money to play in the pros is Stephen Curry an NBA point guard for the Golden State Warriors. According to an article “Should College Athletes Be Paid” by Time Inc., a student in the article says “These people are not professionals, the need to focus on their education. College is for learning not earning” (Time Inc.7). Which is very true. Students need to focus on what they are studying in college. However, these athletes get easy classes so they can play the sport. For instance, a student-athlete will get personal tutors and sometimes will have a lower GPA range like a 2.0 to play in games, which can be unfair to other students. They need to focus on their education because only a small amount of student athletes ending up playing professionally.
