Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

If you could play your favorite sport in college and be paid, would you? Division one colleges have not been paying their athletes not because they don’t need too, but rather because they don’t want to. Although colleges don’t pay their athletes, colleges are allowed to use their players apparel to gain money the actual athletes, making colleges the money, are not getting paid. This has been an ongoing debate on sports channels, such as ESPN. All Division one colleges should pay their players based on how well they play and how many jerseys with their number get sold.

The combined total of both football and basketball incomes for only Division one were $1.2 billion. This information was in 2013-2014, and by now we know that each year for these types of sports the money exponentially rises, which means each player could be paid $5,000 with some variations depending on the player. Should college athletes be paid it states that, “In the past 12 years, the money generated by the two sports has increased nearly 300%”, which means that with time, colleges are just earning more and more money while players aren’t being paid. Some people may argue that athletes shouldn’t be paid, because they are getting their scholarships paid for. This is good for the players because scholarships can cost a heavy amount. Although, if I were Division one and I knew there was a great possibility of going to a professional league and the only reason as to why I am in that college is to get into the professional league, not for education. So to some Division one athletes, those scholarships are almost useless to them if they really wish to go
